Surge in Divorce Cases Following Covid-19 Lockdown

There has been a surge in divorce cases during the Covid-19 pandemic, with many relationships struggling to survive the enforced confinement of lockdown.

Increase in divorce cases

As the Covid-19 pandemic took hold across the globe, psychologists and solicitors both warned that as couples were forced to spend more time together, a rise in divorce cases would inevitably follow. This prediction has, it seems, come true.

The trend began in China, where the novel coronavirus is thought to have originated. The Wuhan province was placed into lockdown in January 2020, and a spike in divorce enquiries was recorded just a couple of months later in March.

In England and Wales, one law firm has reported a 42% increase in divorce enquiries between 23 March (the day the lockdown started) and mid-May, compared to the same period in 2019. Some weeks, enquiries rose by 75% when compared to the previous year.

Reasons for divorce

As the figures show, many couples have found the lockdown hard to bear. Having to spend an increased amount of time together – with few other distractions – has placed strain on some marriages. Along with being forced to live in close quarters, the coronavirus has brought the added burdens of financial hardship, uncertain employment and health concerns. For those already encountering marital difficulties, this has proved too much.

For divorce lawyers, the news does not come as a surprise. Many family solicitors will tell you that January traditionally sees a surge in divorce enquiries, with the festive period driving some couples to breaking point. Christmas and the coronavirus have some parallels in this respect – namely that both require a couple to spend more time together than normal. This leads to more arguments and the realisation that the relationship is no longer a happy one.
